The Huron County commissioners have moved forward on the purchase of a new chiller at the county jail.

The 17-year-old jail chiller, which is the key component to the cooling system, is composed of four compressors. One of those compressors has failed and a second is struggling, the commissioners said previously.

Commissioner Tom Dunlap said the final cost, including installation of the chiller, was $184,000 — higher than the hoped-for price range of $130,000 to $150,000.

I need serenity

Are you kidding me? That's enough to piss off the pope!

This is unreal. It's bad enough that the prisoners require nice comfy conditions, but to spend $34,000 more than what was planned? Since when does the county have that kind of money to throw around? Why did it end up costing so much more? A person can buy a pretty decent house for what that thing cost. The commissioners really dropped the ball on this one.

gotta keep em on ice somehow..

There are a lot of folks who work at the jail who are not locked up there. They are unionized and are required to have satisfactory working conditions. Also this jail was built and operates under Federal Court supervision. Not having a "chiller" is just not an option.

What difference does it make if the jail staff are unionized? Having chillers doesn't constitute satisfactory work conditions, it's more of a safety thing. Lots of people work without air conditioning who are unionized.

...its certainly not out of the 'sheriff joe' playbook...

Joe would probably add space heaters.

...perfect, yes, oh yes he would!

Shouldn't this have been paid via the sales tax levy that currently pays for the maintenance and operations of the jail?

*&^%$@ !! We are broke. Those people need to do without. Our elected commissioners failed US.

I would think for $184,000 you could put in Geo thermal.
