Heath police say they charged a man with murder Thursday after he told family members that he chopped up his father with a sword.

After a brief manhunt, Licking County deputy sheriffs arrested 32-year-old Adam Runyons Jr. in the Utica High School parking lot just before 2 p.m.

Neighbors say Runyons Jr. had moved in with his father, Adam Runyons Sr., 51, and the father’s pre-school-aged son at 479 Woodland Dr. in Heath last month after being released from prison.

According to neighbor Angie Stephens, police were called to the home at about 11 a.m. after relatives had been unable to reach Runyons Sr.

According to the warrant, police entered the home and found the a male victim — who they have not yet officially identified — as well as a bloody machete in the kitchen.

Another neighbor, Harley Whittington, said the crime may have occurred last night, as he heard a car peel out of Runyons’ driveway about 10 p.m. Authorities have not confirmed a time of death, nor have they confirmed whether the preschool-aged son was home at the time, saying only that he now was in the care of family members.

After receiving information that Runyons Jr. was placing calls from Utica, North Fork schools were placed on lockdown.

North Fork Superintendent Scott Hartley said Runyons was observed pulling on the locked gymnasium doors after 1 p.m., and then, after unsuccessfully gaining entrance, he walked past a line of parents outside of the school waiting for their children. A concerned parent call the Licking County sheriff’s office, and Runyons was taken into custody a short time later.

The younger Runyons had served 11 months in prison on two felony counts of assaulting a peace officer and a misdemeanor count of falsification.
