A Sandusky man stipulated Friday there's probable cause he violated his probation.

Walter S. Summerland, 47, has a merits hearing scheduled for June 23.

Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Daivia Kasper said the defendant faces eight counts in his probation violation.

"The allegations are he had cocaine and drug paraphernalia. He was driving without a license. He failed to keep his probation officer advised of his situation," Kasper said.

Summerland's underlying conviction is trafficking in marijuana. He has been on probation since Sept. 28, 2011, according to court records. Summerland faces one year in prison on the probation violation.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Norwalk Police Department served Summerland with a Norwalk Municipal Court warrant at the Huron County Jail. He was charged with failing to report to jail April 18 on the original conviction of driving without a license, according to jail and police records.

Summerland is serving a 10-day jail sentence, which ends May 31.

Judge Jim Conway, during Friday's hearing in common pleas court, ruled Summerland could be released on a personal recognizance bond after his jail term. That means he signed a court document in which he promised to return for future hearings, but didn't have to any money.
