An 11-year-old boy was shot to death Wednesday by a teenage relative during what appears to be horseplay between the two Portage County youths, authorities said.

The boy’s body was found about 11:30 a.m. inside a relative’s home on Johnson Road in Franklin Township, deputies said. His identity was not immediately released.

A 15-year-old relative discharged the handgun and is cooperating with sheriff’s deputies investigating the case, Lt. Gregory Johnson said.

The boys, whose schools were closed Wednesday because of winter weather conditions, were alone inside the house when the shot was fired.

“It’s just devastating for the family,” Johnson said. “My heart goes out to both families.”

Johnson said the shooting appears to have resulted from gunplay. He would not say it was accidental, however.

“That’s unknown at this time. That’s kind of a fine line,” he said.

An investigation is ongoing, and Johnson declined to provide additional details, including the type of handgun used and who owns the weapon.

Agents with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation are assisting in the probe.

The boy’s body was at the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office awaiting an autopsy.
