Motorist dies after crashing into snow plow

The Fremont post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 8:52 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 6, just west of Ohio 19 in Sandusky County.

Daniel D. Johnson, 22, of Helena, was driving a 2002 Pontiac Bonneville east on U.S. 6 when he crashed into the back of an eastbound 2006 International snow plow truck being driven by Donald E. Schlea, 54, of Helena, troopers said.

Johnson, who was wearing his seat belt, died at the scene of the crash, troopers said. His body was taken to the Lucas County Coroner’s office by Lucas County Transport.

Schlea, who also was wearing a safety belt, was transported by ambulance to Fremont Memorial Hospital.

Agencies assisting troopers at the scene included Sandusky County Sheriff’s Department, Sandusky Township Fire and EMS, Fremont Police Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The crash is still under investigation and alcohol use is not suspected, troopers said.
