Bellevue teen killed in crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Sunday evening that killed one and sent another to the hospital. The crash occurred a few miles southwest of Bellevue.

The crash occurred at 9:21 p.m.

Garrett Holmes, 16, Bellevue, was operating a 2001 Ford Focus which sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene by John's Towing. Holmes sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger, Dakota Schaffer, 17, of Bellevue, was transported to The Bellevue Hospital and subsequently UTMC in Toledo, by North Central EMS. Schaffer sustained life-threatening injuries.

Holmes was traveling southwest on Ohio 18, southwest of Bellevue. Troopers said he drove off the left side of the road striking and traveling through a ditch and subsequently striking a barn, landscape rocks and a tree. Both occupants were restrained and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation at this time.
