The West Carrollton man who fired a ‘warning shot’ at his son that went through a wall and killed his son’s girlfriend has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. He will receive a 30-month sentence.

Ira Perkins, 70, pleaded guilty Friday afternoon in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court and reached an agreement on a sentence for his role in the May 3 shooting of 25-year-old Brittany Geiger.

Perkins, who will receive jail time credit for time served, will be sentenced Nov. 26 in front of Judge Mary K. Huffman. Perkins’ trial was to begin Tuesday. Perkins likely would have received a longer sentence had a jury found him guilty. The charge included a gun specification that would have included a mandatory 3-year sentence.

West Carrollton police detectives said Perkins fired the gun in a home in the 5000 block of Marcy Road during an argument with his son, Joshua. The slug went through a wall, striking and killing Geiger.

“This certainly was a tragedy in our city, and shows why people are not permitted to discharge firearms within the city,” police Chief Richard Barnhart said in a prepared statement earlier this year. “People should always be aware of their surroundings if they are going to handle firearms.”

Perkins admitted during the 911 call that he shot his gun. “I shot through the wall,” Perkins said to a dispatcher. “She was on the steps.”

Geiger and her boyfriend survived a fire that destroyed their Miamisburg South Main Street apartment in August 2012. She told a local television crew that they were lucky to get out with their pets and that people have to stay positive.

Perkins’ attorney, H. Charles Wagner, did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

“Gun ownership requires persons to act responsibly and not discharge a deadly weapon so recklessly and without regard for the consequences,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. said earlier this summer.
