Huron County Airport's future in jeopardy?

Dunlap says he and fellow commissioners are working to sell airport

Huron County Commissioner Tom Dunlap said, in his opinion, the board is currently taking the necessary steps to ultimately sell the airport.

How the county can actually get to the point where it can sell the facility is a tangled web, Dunlap said.

Supporters of selling the airport say it can be done.

Local pilots and the group Friends of the Huron County Airport say it's nearly impossible to sell.

A story about this subject was published recently in the Norwalk Reflector.

Going to have to agree with you on this one. Everyone seems to think that grant money just comes out of the magical grant tree in Washington. They also have this notion that as long as my tax base doesn't going up, why not use it. This is a major problem in this nation as well. Grant money nationwide is tax money collected from the taxpayers.

Start putting more money in people's pockets.

propman

Yes it is money from taxes.
Taxes that have already been paid for the purpose of maintaining and improving the infrastructure.
It doesn't come from the general fund. Pilots have fought every year for decades to keep that tax separate from the general fund.

April 3, 2011, Sandusky Register, Viewpoint:

"The FAA has provided grant money for airport upgrades -- about 1.2 million -- since 2006. But those grants require local matching funds. So while there's money available for development, there seems no viable plan to make the airport successful."

"We hope commissioners continue staring down the FAA and make sure its representatives know that holding a local business hostage to maintain the financial sinkhole is not good business."

propman

The last two years local businesses and individuals have provided the money to pay those matching funds.
It would not have cost the county a dime

AnAmerican

Two years, please! When will it payback the hundreds of thousands already lost?

lawtfcur

The same time the highway dept pays the county taxpayer back for the road repairs completed over the past 20 or more years. You talk about hundreds of thousands of dollars lost and single out one piece of our transportation sytem. Why aren't you clammering about all the county funds and grant funds (tax dollars) spent annually on our county roads and bridges. Same difference except it doesn't fit into your position statement.

AnAmerican

Deflecting again; Other county departments have nothing to do with the argument. Huron County Taxpayers use the ROADS. Only a few use the airport. A city/village/county can function and progress without an airport; without roads they cannot.

IndependentThinker

If the commissioners would indicate a willingness to accept FAA entitlement grant funds, the matching funds would flow easily as donations to the county grant application. Numerous people are waiting in the wings to step forward for this program to bring needed dollars into our community. Drainage and obstructions are still an issue the county has not addressed appropriately.

AnAmerican

lmao you can't be serious, you think you can get donations for a 50% match? Tell ya what, how about you get those PLEDGES, in writing, from whom and exactly how much, and then display a plan to make the airport a viable, profitable entity and then maybe the Commissioners and Huron County taxpayers will take you and your group seriously.

propman

Really, after that diatribe I now can with reasonable certainty say to you-
Essex stop your political campaining on county time

AnAmerican

Insult and deflect is all you can manage; Knew you wouldn't, or rather couldn't, provide itemized donations list and viable profit plan.

propman

Sure Essex and you have done nothing as an board member except work to sabotage the airport
Any plan you have presented has only been to the detriment of the county.

2sense

I think you should buy it Don.

propman

Hi, senseless
Way off the mark
But if I had the money I'd outbid bader just to keep it out of his hands.

rogerthat

Very telling post there propman. You don't care about any benefit to the county, you just want to thwart Bader.

propman

You think so Roger?
I wouldn't be closing the airport like bader would.
It would still be there for the community's use.
The benefit to the community is not from how much the "airport" earns but from how the access it provides helps the local businesses.
It is the local exit/entrance to the aerial highway. close it and the area will suffer like those places that didn't get the railroad or interstate highways to come through.

rogerthat

And yet all the people who are in a position to know what businesses are looking for say that the airport was never mentioned once by any of them. It's just not important. The community doesn't use it and sees no benefit from it. Privatize the airport and move it.

propman

And just what people are you talking about Roger?
The commissioners? They have already shown their bias against the airport.
A bias that has been "no matter what we will close it by any means we can!"

the end

You can insult all you want the end is near

The Federal airport improvement funds require a 10% match, not 50%. I would imagine the names of the people donating or pledging donations is nobody's business but their own, unless they want their names released. Promoting the airport and our community has always been the position description for our economic development officials, and our local politicians. We don't have an 11% unemployment rate because of all the businesses knocking on our door to build here. Everybody blames everybody else. The commissioners and eocnomic officials in this county are worthless. People should be finding the answers as to why the major manufacturing businesses are abandoning huron county and ohio. Ive seen references insinuating Sunrise can move their aerial spraying operation someplace else. Real accomadaing. maybe Sunrise will pick up their statkes and move to another county firendlier to their needs. I for one as a farmer am not interesting in paying additional fees for labor, fuel etc, due to the additional distances the aerial applicator would have to travel to fertilize my crops, compared to the currrent operation basing at the airport.

KURTje

FAA Entitlement funds are TAX $$. Only those "funds" = welfare for the moneyed few. We pay for that. Not you. Again IF the airport can make it without tax dollars, then so be it.

propman

KURTje, Yes the fund is comprised of taxes.
All of it is from taxes on aviation activities. All of it has already been collected. That fund can not operate in a deficit.
It is used for local and major airport improvements, such as Huron County and Chicago's O'Hare.

Truckstop

Where's Contango in all of this? His uneducated drivel would be a great compliment to this useless debate. Oh I forgot, Silcox, errr Contango, is running for Commissioner in 2014 and probably is afraid to comment.

Scranton Tibbs

RE: "Where's Contango in all of this?"

I'll do my best to pretend to be said poster, and post in Contango style. Instead of "Contango", I'll go by the name "Backwardation" for this post.

Read's like: You're looking for Contango's input on the airport matter.

IMO, Contango wouldn't have much to add. Then would insert some random link.

See: :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nor... so you could research independently.

Truckstop

I'm laughing too hard to think of anything witty. You're my hero!

lawtfcur

If we could put people like Silcox, Essex, Hintz, Bauer, Duncox, and the airport board president on a slow boat to china, just think about all the problems we could solve locally. That's a grant fund I'd even be happy to donate to. Maybe Essex will get indicted by North Fairfield. I'm still trying to figure out how Essex can get away with being a county employee on salary, and employee of the city of North Fairfield, and a member (or as I am told the unofficial director) of the huron county airport board, all at the same time. Can anyone say or understand the meaning of "Conflict of Interest". Essex has all of the qualities of a politician.

AnAmerican

Another typical deflect and insult when you have no valid point.

Any of you have that itemized list of donators and sums for the matching grant funds? How about a viable plan for profit?

propman

More indications that you are ESSEX with that reply.

arnmcrmn

Cost to operate and maintain vs What the airport brings in each year.

If its close keep it, if not dump it. Pretty easy.
