A Norwalk man’s bond hearing was scheduled for today in connection with his arrest Sunday on a charge of aggravated robbery with a gun.
Michael L. Gheta, 33, entered Aldi Sunday with a 22-caliber rifle and took off with more than $800 in cash, Norwalk Police Sgt. Jim Fulton said Sunday night. Fulton declined to release further details of the robbery, saying they would be available today.
“We’re still completing the investigation,” he said.
Officials at Aldi headquarters did not return a message seeking comment Sunday night.
Fulton said nobody was injured during the incident, after which witnesses saw Gheta flee on a bicycle to his home on Willard Avenue. He dumped his bicycle behind 37 W. Willard Ave. and went inside his home at 35 W. Willard Ave.
Fulton said Gheta was in the back of a police car by the time he arrived on the scene.
Gheta was then brought back into the house at which time a gun and a cash register drawer were believed to be found.
Gheta was arrested without incident and taken to the Huron County Jail to await his bond hearing, Fulton said. He will be charged with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony, which can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, Fulton said. He added the gun specification could tack on added years.
Norwalk Police were aided by deputies from the Huron County’s Sheriff’s Office, who brought in a dog.
Jason Zimmerman, whose sister lives on the same street as Gheta, said the defendant has been known to sit on his porch and talk on the phone in a hostile manner.
