GROTON TOWNSHIP - The Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol says alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash Friday night involving a Monroeville driver and a Medina County motorcyclist.

Matthew J. Boggs, 28, of 11217 Thomas Road, was charged with failure to maintain assured clear distance in the crash at the intersection of Ohio 4 and Ohio 99. Troopers said he failed to see the 1999 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic motorcycle driven by Mitchell E. Smith, 51, of Valley City. Smith had stopped heading south on Ohio 4 and was waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn onto Ohio 99.

Boggs' 2005 Chevrolet Impala hit the rear of the bike, ejecting Smith and his passenger, Pennie K. Walters, 46, of Medina. Troopers said both Smith and Walters weren't wearing helmets and the bike skidded about 60 feet down Ohio 4 before stopping.

A medical helicopter flew Walters from the scene to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center with serious injuries. There was no further information this morning about her condition.

North Central EMS transported Smith to Firelands Regional Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries. He was treated and released. Boggs, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

I've always wondered why there is no traffic light at SR99 and SR4 but for some reason there is one at Portland Rd and SR4....

There is a traffic light at portland road, because of all the truck traffic leaving the quarry. I go through 99 and 4 5 days a week, not so bad. It was a rear end accident, a light might not have made a difference. But I also am not a hipocrit, the person driving the car is my cousin Matt. he is a good driver, and doesn;t drink, I just hope the two on the Harley fully recover, and I know Matt is really upset and remorseful about this tragic accident.
