Three puppies reportedly dog-napped from a Conneaut house over the weekend are valued at $15,000, the owner told police.

The Middle Road resident contacted police around 8:30 a.m. Sunday to report the theft of three American bulldog puppies, said Police Chief Charles Burlingham. The man told officers the puppies are valued at $5,000 each.

The puppies were kept in a kennel on the property, Burlingham said. The owner’s daughter checked on the dogs around 2 a.m., he said.

Four puppies were kept in the kennel, but one was left behind, Burlingham said.

Police were told the kennel’s gate was found “untied” by the owner, who told officers he had no idea who would have taken the dogs. The owner does not believe the puppies wandered away through the unsecured gate, police said.

The exact age of the puppies was not immediate known.

Later, the owner advised police he found on the Internet an ad offering for sale bulldog puppies that resembled his missing dogs, Burlingham said. The ad was reportedly placed by an Ashtabula resident, he said.

Ashtabula police have been asked to assist in the investigation, Burlingham said.
