Fisher-Titus Medical Center's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services was recently awarded an accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

More than 1,400 standards of care were evaluated. This stringent inspection program is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory's patients. No deficiencies or recommendations for improvement were identified in the FTMC laboratory. Dr. William Cornell, medical director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the "excellence of the services provided." FTMC's Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services is one of more than 6,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff's qualifications, the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory.

"Thanks to FTMC's laboratory staff for their 'highly organized approach' in ensuring quality patient care," said Robert Everett, FTMC's technical laboratory director. "Our staff is dedicated to providing high-quality and cost-effective medical care, performing over 400,000 procedures in 2006."
