Roasts & Toasts

Let's put a wrap on the 2007 Huron County Fair with this week's Roast and Toasts. Toast the fair for another great run. The entertainment was great and the weather was beautiful. A special toast goes out to auctioneer G.A. Pickworth, who was honored for his more than 40 years of work at the fair with the livestock and other auctions. Pickworth was honored with the naming of the "Auctioneer G.A. Judging Pavilion." Congratulations for a job well done and an honor well deserved.

Roast the ATV races as Thursday night's races. We know boys will be boys, and some events are a little tougher than others, but this may have gone over the edge. Three competitors were injured and had to be taken away by ambulance. One had to be flown by helicopter to Toledo. You can bet the fair's insurance rates will take quite a hit on that one.

Toast all of the volunteers who donated thousands of hours to put on the event. From the fair directors to the volunteer fireman and everybody in between, it takes quite a team effort to pull it off. And toast all of the gate workers from the Norwalk Elks Club. They do it as a fundraiser for their club then turn around and use the money to fund all of their community projects.

Roast the swine-barn shutdown Friday morning. Other than the mishaps in the ATV races, this was the only real setback of the week. Fair officials did a fine job of jumping on the situation, but it was just a real downer for all of the youngsters who had pigs at the fair. The animals were still penned up this morning, and, hopefully, they will be released Tuesday and sent off to market.
