An additional 77 full-time jobs within the next two years could be added to the city’s tax base if officials approve a plan by Pepperidge Farm to expand.

A story about the subject was published in Wednesday's Norwalk Reflector. To read the story, pick up a copy of that issue or subscribe to the e-paper (a complete digital replica of each issue) for less than $1 per week and read it now.

Not like you have alot of other options City of Willard. Take care of what you have.

It is GREAT that Pepperidge Farms wants to expand. But the Tax abatement I'm not sure I agree with this. Yes 77 full time jobs is a good thing. But how long will it take for the "Full Time" jobs to occur. If they use temp workers as they do now, the jobs will never really be "Full Time". These people should be hired a FULL TIME from the onset, without going thru a temp service, to be eligable for the Tax abatement. Temp sevices are a terrible thing in this area. The people who have to go thru them, still cannot afford to buy houses, cars, or anything. The Temp services keep much of the money paid and the workers get just over minimum wage. I also think that if Pepperidge Farms in Willard gets a Tax abatement and does hire 77 "Full Time" jobs...the people hired should most certainly come from Willard. Full time jobs are deffinately needed here...But lets put some serious thought into the conditions before granting a Tax Abatement.
Pepperidge Farms could actually hire a lot more than 77 people. As it is now they work their people 7 days per weekfor a month at a time. School kids NEVER see their mothers that work 2nd shift there. Deffinately not a family oriented business.

believe it

LOL...just shut up. People are never happy with anything, are they? People complain when there aren't jobs coming to the area, then when there are, they find something wrong with those jobs too.

brutalyhonest

I don't have a problem with the jobs coming to the area, I have a problem with the circumstances of a Tax Abatement. Maybe the Temp service here is the one to get the Tax abatement...then they can pay their workers more....thats all...plain and simple

Huron county has one of the highest unemployment rates in Ohio.
No room to negotiate, take it.

brutalyhonest

You're right, Huron County has one of the highest unemployment rates in Ohio...Look at each and every one of the Factories that were shut down. They were UNION...they negotiated theirselves right out of a job......Most of the places still running and making a profit are Non-Union factories. Blame the Unions for the high unemployment rate..not the county.

Temp services give the 90 day before "fulltime" hire then the plant lays them off or fires them on the 89th and surprise! There is another sucker waiting in the wings with hope and dreams that will never come to fruition.

They don't want to pay bennies is what it comes down to. It's all over northern OH.

Those 77 fulltime jobs will be replaced every 89 days.

I've seen a lot of people jump through hoops just to get canned on the 89th day and go back on unemployment just to start the cycle again and again.

We are still in a recession and the corporations are using people like equipment through temp services. It's cheaper.

brutalyhonest

AMEN !!!

kURTje

luvblues got it. If you (corp.) get tax breaks (US), then at least have the decency to make those new jobs permanent. You can not have it both ways.

Wow, seems like there is a lot of assuming on here. This is good news but leave it to the nay sayers to find something to complain about. They said over the next 2 years they will have 77 NEW FULL TIME JOBS. Don't see what the problem is. Keep complaining though!

believe it

Exactly, like I said, people are never happy. I bet these same people complaining on here would find something wrong if someone just gave them a million dollars. Just be happy that there's a company expanding here instead of laying people off like a lot of companies are doing. Always gotta find the negative side of things though. I feel sorry for people like that.

luvblues2

I'm not assuming anything arn. I have witnessed it. I used to do contract skilled labor in that place and I know what they do. I ate Goldfish hot out of the oven and cookies right off the line. Can you say the same?

I DO know how these temp services and plants work together as well. It's been happening since the late '80's and early '90's.

Trust me arn, I promise that you don't want me to start on what Dentists payments are per hour. I have 70-30 and it still hurts like hell physically and pocketwise. Your profession is worse than an emergency room visit.

brutalyhonest

Why is it, that everytime there are comments made to a particular story, Someone Always has to take a personal blow to the people making the comments...Childish to say the least.

It's the nature of the beast, brutalyhonest. It's instant messaging. Cat is out of the bag, per se. If you don't talk about yourself, people behind the screen only know you as a name/handle/ID. That's why anonymity works well for most.

Some have big egos that they just can't let go of. Ask them why.

arnmcrmn

Who's taking it personal? It's good news about the jobs, that's all I've said, yet here comes the personal jab. If you are looking for an apology then you are barking up the wrong tree. You won't get one from me. I've taken on a lot of debt and put myself thought 8 years of hard school to do something most cant nor would not choose to do. If that makes me have a big ego in your world...well once again, I won't apologize. If you aren't happy with your dentist you are happy to shop around but buyer beware, you get what you pay for. I'm very happy to see more jobs coming to this area.... From a dedicated and loyal Willard resident.

believe it

It's amazing that a good story about jobs(something this area needs) has to turn into this. Too much negativity and people always complaining. Constant complainers must live fun lives(sarcasm alert).

brutalyhonest

It's not good news....IT's Great news to see jobs coming. My only problem was the Tax abatement. If they get the Tax abatement...there better be at least 77 FULL Time jobs. Not 45,not 50....but 77..I feel that if an abatement is granted in the City of Willard...those 77 jobs should come from Willard. The other problem is..if the abatement is granted..Who monitors the criteria to see if all has been followed thru...certainly not The City Manager here...The criteria should be monitored and Revokable if, and thats a big IF they don't follow thru...It's all about another Corporation getting out of paying taxes...
Thats all I was saying...

arnmcrmn

I agree about the temp services. I'm not to keen on them but I think with this size of an expansion they will have to hire full time positions.

WASP71

I know the Spherion Temp sevice at MTD are working their people 8-10 hour days, was 6 day weeks to keep up. No one is getting laid off unless they aren't the good workers and are just "bodies" when needed. As of right now they can't even keep up with help because no one wants to work that many hours. Would rather stay home and play XBox and get handouts. Need a job- go to MTD Spherion. 99% chance you'll be working in a week. And no- I don't work for either company, have family that works there. And they start at either $9 or $9.50. Better than minimum, and better than me paying you to sit on your a**. Oh- and they also offer you benefits. Maybe not as cheap or quite as good as a regular companies, but they still offer them.

brutalyhonest

I don't know how MTD got dragged into this, but just to clarify.....Right now they bobbling between an 8 hour and 9 hour shifts. If they work 10 hour shifts it is only to catch up so that MTD don't miss the lay-off deadline in late May or mid June. When they do lay off....the temps are first to go..then the full time people are offered volunteer lay-off...if to many of them accept the volunteer lay-off....then they will bring back some of the temps...and in a lot of cases...it is different people than what was there before...

WASP71

MTD got dragged into this because of the talk of temp services. And why wouldn't the temps go first? Would you lay off 20 year person to keep a 6 month person. They will lay off do to the economy and pieces already made. They always lay off 2-4 weeks in the summer and the temps know that going in. So it's not all the temps fault. Don't get me wrong- sometimes it is- I was just stating that at MTD it isn't going like was stated with 89 on then start over. DO the temp services try to plac these people on the layoff or are they just done and get unemployment? I would think that some could be placed at other facilities...that is if Huron county has a job for them!

luvblues2

That is the problem, WASP71. They will and do lay off the 20 year person and keep the temp at a lower wage. Again, I am not assuming this, it's truth. After 89 days, another temp, then another. Just keep around a few who know all the jobs well enough to keep training the temps. The ones who catch on fast, get to train the new temps.

With the economy in this state, the cycle won't die down anytime soon.

WASP71

I didn't know they could do that. In that case then I can see why everyone gets upset with the temp services. That is one of those loopholes that you'd think someone would look into. No wonder the full time employee is going the way side.

kURTje

A manager stated - "It is shameful the way our organization does temps." Pepperidge is similar. Make those jobs full-time.

Mr. Touchdown

After news of the latest Donnelley meeting...I hope the 77 full time jobs are all filled by former Donnelley employees!

Snoozer

All temp services should be outlawed period! Its organized slavery is all it is. You work at a sweatshop we "the temp service" sit in an airconditioned office and make money off the sweat of your brow! Sure we will pay for the drug testing and workmans comp.and make a profit off your labor! Its such a sweet deal for the temp service and the company, when your fed up the temp service has 20 more people to replace you and the cycle keeps continuing! Lets put this on the ballot box?

luvblues2

Ohio is an “employment-at-will” state. Look it up. It basically states that an employer does not need a reason to fire you. If your boss woke up on the wrong side of his bed and spilled his coffee on his lap on the way to work and doesn't like the color of your shirt, he can fire you. You have no recourse unless you are in a union.

That doesn't mean you cannot collect unemployment. It just means you are done working there.

starryeyes83

What you guys w ant to make sure of is that those 77 jobs are full time and "permanent" and all that entails.

I have known people ( good workers) who have worked at Whirlpool for several years and they are STILL under a temp service. Not actually hired by Whirlpool. I don't understand it and have wondered IF other companies do that.

It seems dirty pool to me.
