Two Ohio State University students were killed and two others were injured on Saturday in a car crash in the Florida panhandle, state troopers said.
Brittney S. Gallagher and Courtney L. Miller, both 21 and from northeastern Ohio, died at the scene of the 11:15 a.m. crash near Ebro, Fla., about 16 miles north of Panama City Beach. Gallagher was from Willoughby, east of Cleveland. Miller, her front-seat passenger, was from Niles near Youngstown.
Two other Ohio State students, identified as Diana N. Mitchell, 22, of Solon, and Lauren E. Kane, 22, of Willoughby, were taken to Bay Medical Center in Panama City in critical condition.
Mitchell was listed in stable condition and Kane in guarded condition at 8 p.m. yesterday, a nursing supervisor said.
The four seniors were returning to Ohio from a spring-break trip to Panama City Beach.
Florida state troopers said Gallagher was driving west on Rt. 20 when she drifted into the eastbound lane for an unknown reason. When she tried to recover and move back into her westbound lane, she overcorrected and the car went into a spin, troopers said.
The car crossed again into the eastbound lane and collided with a pickup truck carrying five college students from Oklahoma and Missouri. All five of those students were taken to area hospitals with various injuries.
OSU's student directory lists Gallagher as majoring in consumer and family financial services. Miller was a middle childhood education major.
Mitchell is majoring in health sciences and pre-physical therapy, according to her Twitter page. Kane is a biology major.
According to their social-media posts, the friends began their trip to Florida on March 10. Later that day, Miller tweeted, "four girls with a flat tire in Kentucky." But on March 11 she tweeted that they had reached Panama City Beach, and Kane tweeted on Friday, "I'm not ready to leave PCB yet."
