Two Willard men accused of assaulting a carnival worker July 2 were indicted by a Huron County grand jury Friday.

Chad M. Flanders, 32, of 2818 Section Line Road 30, and Joshua D. Bartell, 27, of 3934 Walnut Road, were charged with one count each of aggravated robbery, robbery, felonious assault and kidnapping. Flanders faces two charges of failure to comply with the order of a police officer.

The two suspects are accused of scheming to rob the victim after they befriended him, Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said. The victim was working at a Willard festival.

Flanders and Bartell were supposed to drive him to Willard. Instead, they reportedly dragged the man out of the vehicle and punched and kicked him for about 20 minutes before stealing his wallet along with $40, jewelry, and a leather jacket, prosecutors said earlier.

"They worked him over pretty good out in the country," Leffler said.

Willard EMS transported the victim to the hospital after he went to a Thomas Road home. He sustained a couple broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a blood cot in his eye.

The suspects returned to the crime scene and were pursued by a deputy who saw the vehicle nearby. After a high-speed pursuit, Flanders crashed in someone's front yard and he and Bartell fled on foot, Leffler said.

"They had to track them down through (who owned) the vehicle," the prosecutor added.

Both suspects, who were arrested several days after the assault, remain in custody at the Huron County Jail.
