A Mansfield man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash in Richland County in January after he allowed a 17-year-old to drink alcohol in his home.

Tyler A. Smith, 22, of Mansfield, was charged with allowing a person under 21 to possess or consume beer and allowing a person under 21 to possess or consume intoxicating alcohol.

“Everyone needs to know there will be consequences for people and businesses that furnish alcohol to minors and intoxicated individuals,” said Canton Agent-in-Charge John Campbell. “We hope that other families don’t have to go through the pain and tragedy of losing someone they love because an individual was served excessive amounts of alcohol before they drove.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at 10:20 p.m. Jan. 23, the 17-year old impaired driver was attempting to pass another vehicle on North Washington Road just south of Mansfield-Washington Road, when he lost control and struck a mailbox, a trash can and two trees.

If convicted, Smith could face up to 6 months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
