NEW LONDON — John Chapin was named the New London Rotary Club Citizen of the Year for his community service activities Monday.

Chapin serves as fire chief and superintendent of water and wastewater for the village, as well as a driver for Firelands Ambulance Service.

Several people nominated Chapin for the honor, one of them writing: “John Chapin has dedicated his life to the village of New London.” Another praised Chapin for “his character, sense of humor, and fairness to all who work with or for him.”

“What a day!” Chapin responded after the surprise announcement. Not only did he win the honor, but Monday was also his birthday and the day his daughter gave birth to healthy twin daughters.

Chapin received a plaque from the Rotary Club and will be guest of honor in the Firelands Labor Day Festival parade Sept. 1.

Cathy Carpenter, a Rotarian for eight years and treasurer of the United Fund Drive, was named Rotarian of the Year.
