Alcohol suspected in Ridge Road fatality

The state Highway Patrol suspects the driver in a Thursday morning crash on Ridge Road that killed a Monroeville man was under the influence of alcohol. Trooper Steve Drew, in his report released today, said there was a blood test performed on the driver, Timothy A. Brant, 26, of 330 Peru Center Road, Monroeville. Brant's brother and passenger, Michael D. Brant, 29, of 2612 Ohio 162, was pronounced dead at the scene by Huron County Coroner Dr. Jeffrey Harwood.

Two witnesses saw both men at a Benedict Avenue bar minutes before the crash, Lt. Jim Bryan said. One of the witnesses reported seeing Timothy Brant consuming alcohol, he added.

Test results for Brant won't be available until about four to six weeks after the patrol subpoenas hospital records, Bryan explained.

The driver, who was wearing his seat belt, was taken from the scene to the Medical University of Ohio Medical Center in Toledo. A Medical University spokesman said the hospital had a listing for Brant, but no condition was available this morning.

"I believe he has been released," Bryan said.

Brant was heading south on Ridge Road near South Norwalk Road about 2:15 a.m. Thursday when he failed to negotiate a curve. He went off the right side of the road and hit a guard rail and bridge, which ripped the 1993 Dodge Intrepid in half from front to back and ejected the passenger, Drew said.

A Norwalk firefighter estimated the passenger, Michael Brant, was thrown about 50 or 60 feet from the car. Troopers haven't determined if he was wearing a seat belt because of the damage to the Intrepid.

Earlier, Sgt. Mary Mack estimated both halves of the vehicle were about 100 feet apart from where the driver left Ridge Road. She said Timothy Brant, the driver, may have had internal injuries to his chest area.

Sgt. Anthony DeChoudens, who arrived first on the scene, spoke to Brant and "detected an odor of alcohol on him," Bryan said.

The post commander said a Mansfield-area trooper has been assigned as a crash reconstructionist to determine speed and make sure "all the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed" because of the severity of the crash.

No charges have been filed in Norwalk Municipal Court, and the investigation is ongoing.

"I'm waiting to hear back from the patrol," Norwalk Law Director Stuart O'Hara said.

I think they need to close is comment page, because people seem to have no respect at all. All they want to do is talk trash and down grade the last name Brant. No I am not a Brant, but there is no since in all you people acting like 2 year olds. Let this family rest. Who gives a rats behind if they have been in jail or what they have done with there lives, did it cost you money. Before you put others down, go take a good look in your own mirror.Did people down grade President Clinton. No they didn't , so don't down grade these people. YOU ALL NEED TO GROW UP

Interesting ......

As a matter of fact, Mike's criminal behavior DID cost us, the taxpayers, money. You can be certain that more that a few dollars were spent on his public defenders and his time spent in prison. It should come as no shock that the family's sense of loss is not shared by the average citizen. I'm sure reading these comments is hard for the family, but this man's legacy speak for itself. Instead of retorting to such comments with threats of violence and ridiculous justifications, the family needs be mourning their loved one with some class and not perpetuating the reputation he created for himself in life.

so sick of all ...

A man is dead people. A family is grieving, and all you can do is bash his family???? This is ridiculous!! I met some of the Brants when I first moved to this town and these men did nothing but befriend me and protect me whenever need be. Tim is going to have a hard time dealing with what happened, its not for us to decide what happens to him from the law. I am so sick of people judging their family. They might be bada**es, but that doesn't mean they are bad people. Everyone makes mistakes. This one happened to be fatal. Alot of you hypocrites on here leave your ritzy bars in your ritzy cars drunk, and so far you have been lucky. It could have happened to anyone. I am very very very sorry for your loss. I hope that you all leave the family alone so Michael can rest in peace. My thoughts are with all of you, and I am very sorry for your loss. Tim, your guilt and your hurt may never go away, but I wish you nothing but the best in your life. I hope you stay strong (which I know you will) and you keep your head up. You will punish yourself more than any Court or Judge possibly could. God Bless

to Angel why don't you disrepect your family like you are my nephews you sound like a low life piece of trash if anyone should rot in hell for talking about people like them what if you were in their shoes?

RE: from angel...

To Angel Is Watching Mike: Which Brant did you buy your dopefrom? It sounds like your on one hell of a acid trip or something. Your crazy lady!

Aunt (Anonymous)

I am so sick of people putting others down.I could care less if the people in this accident had the last name Brant.Everyday there is a bad accident in this world and they have a different last name.So whats up with all you people that want to slander the Brant name.Who knows maybe your kids will end up doing something bad and you get a bad name.We have all done some bad s*** in our life time ,so why don't all of you get a life . This family has to carry this heavy load the rest of there life. Loss one of your child and see how you feel, this could have happened to anyone of us.These boy may have done some things in there life that was wrong and they served there time, but they would give you the shirt off there back

to aunt (Anonymous)

sure they would give you the shirt off their back..... but only if you were white

Maybe the reason everyone is so negative is because for years we have had to put up with sh*t from this family. It's hard to be nice when this person has caused so much hurt and pain to so many people. Would you say nice comments about Hitler just because he was a child to someone and he had a family? No! So why should we feel sorry for this family just because they lost a son, brother, father? Years of hurt and trouble don't just go away because someone passed away. He was a racist piece of sh*t and I have no sympathy for him or any of his family, their all the same. I won't be fake and act like I feel bad for them when I don't, I'm glad this happened. Maybe if a few more would die the family would change their ways, I doubt it though. If their so upset and such good people, why were the police called to the funeral? I'll tell you why, because like I've been saying all along THEIR TRASH!

TO Angel what you wrote on July 17th at 10:17 about Mike being a drunk and a druggie and that Tim should rot in hell along with Mike I don't know why people don't have any respect for my sister an brother-in-law along with the rest of the family this is a hard time for all of us to get through everyone makes mistakes in their lifes and you don't here everyone put them down like they are on here my heart gos out my sister and her husand and family one day you will all have to meet our maker and I hope everyone put trash on here about all of you that wrote bad things about the Brants they are just like other people in this world the only person we have to account to is the Lord himself.

aunt (Anonymous)

it seems that the ones who write bad things about them that you all go to the bars and that is were the stuff gets started and it looks like you all fought back on them too so you are know better then they are and in the lords eyes we are all the same color we all eat, sleep and go to the bathroom the same as everyone else if you all read the Bible we are all brothers and sisters

Mixed emotions ...

Respond to aunt: In my eyes I see only people, not race. Im not sure if that comment was for me or not and Im really not taking it like it was. I will have to say that its not a crime for them to go to the bars or for myself. We all are adults and of age. Getting back to the point of this whole page is a man was killed by another man drunk driving. Point blank!

aunt (Anonymous)

mixed it wasn't for you it was for everyone that has bad things to say I'm just tried for everyone putting down the Brants yes someone got killed an my heart gos out to the family but when people drink and get drunk they say things and don't remember saying things and I'm sorry for they way that they did you but as you know I can't change it but I'm sorry

To #1 Bite your tongue, whoever you are. I've never read such evil comments in my life about a family who has lost a loved one. Comparing Mike Brant to Hilter?? Let me tell you this;Proverbs 18:21 in the New Living Translation says: "Those who love to talk will experience the consequences, for the tongue can kill or nourish life." I'm praying for you #1 and I suggest you do the same. Looks like you are headed down a HOT road if you don't.
As for the Brant family, once again I'm sorry about your loss. Everyone makes mistakes and we all pay for them in different ways. May peace be with your family.

To Mixed Emotions: I understand where you are coming from but you should bring those things to light while the people you have a problem with are still alive. You don't take it out on their family who had absolutely nothing to do with what Mike and Tim called you. Using a forum like this to "prove a point" or "get back at Mike" is not the way to redeem yourself. Try praying about it and giving your frustrations to the Lord. That's what He is there for. The family doesn't deserve to suffer two-fold by hearing all of these things that Mike and Tim did to you or anyone else for that matter. I feel sorry for you and everyone else on this forum that references the Lord in one part of a sentence and then in the other part cus and threaten harm. You all are in for a great awakening when you face the Almighty one day. I suggest you pick up a Bible and head to your nearest church. Get right with the Lord and each other. May peace be with you.

mixed emotions ...

I respect everyones comments on here and understand that each of us have an opinion. My relationship with God is exactly that... Me and God. Not to preach the word of God to everyone else like "I am God" cause that is not true by far. Im not one to throw stones, or to judge. I AM one to live and learn from experiences. I was stating a situation that happen to me and the fact that the last thing I knew of these young men was negative. Making a point by saying would you want the last thing people to remember about you to be negative??? If you think deep into it, wouldnt it just be easier to be nice, peaceful, giving, happy, trustworthy.... instead of deviant, raciest, and the list goes on. NO I AM NOT CALLING THESE YOUNG MEN THAT... I am stating a fact that Life would be alot smoother for everyone if people would.

To mixed emotions: you don't have to apologize to these people for what happened to you that night. All they are trying to do is make Tim and Mike look like little angels. Everyone is bringing God into this, well I wouldn't be so sure that Mike is in heaven. I don't think he even believed in the Lord. With the way he lived, I doubt it. Like I've said all along he is/was a racist piece of trash. Your story only backs up what I've been saying this whole time! Thanks for sharing.

If either of you knew about the Bible or had a relationship with the Lord, then you would know that spreading His word is exactly what we are to do as a follower of Christ.
No one is trying to make Mike look like an angel and no one is better than anyone. I don't know of anyone who has "money" in Norwalk, Ohio. This just tells me that you all need to get out and expand your horizons a little. There is a whole big world outside of tiny Huron County. Maybe #1 and Mixed Emotions should get together and do just that. Then maybe you would have more time to experience and enjoy your own lives then try to bring someone elses down just because yours isn't all that and a bag of chips.Once again, how pathetic.

Wow (Anonymous)

I cannot believe that this is happening. A person lost his life. A friend lost a companion, a family lost their son. Nobody is asking you if you liked him or not. Perhaps he did or didn't make a difference in your life, good or bad, but he still was a person. Lost souls are to be loved, even those with habits you and I don't understand. You have now become what you apparently hated him for. Please take time out to think about this. I do believe in Karma and I am not sure you aren't creating your own with these nasty letters. He is gone never to bother you again. May he rest in peace and may you be able to find peace within yourself so you don't have to go around spitting to make yourself feel better. "

just to let you know s.b.,there are people with a LOT of money in Norwalk&some surrounding areas!I know this for a fact!I happen to be related to some.i'm poor though!it really shocks me the way these rich young people[families have businesses]that they workat or just hang out there& pretend that they do something for a few hours!and the money that the wifes go out of town& spend!yikes!i know this because i'm around it sometimes.they spend like there is no tomorrow, like it's alway's going to be there!and here we are just trying to keep our heads above water, with inflation!yikes!what i find very confusing is when these wive's spend a ton of money on landscaper's&interior designer's& believe it or not they did a crappy job& charged them a fortune!but the wive's alway's ask for your opinion& you feel obligated to lie to them& say you like it to, because they are so excited about it you don't want to hurt their feelings!i just want to tell them stop the insanity!i will come to their house a work for free to help them!

to southernbell...

go preach somewhere else. not everyone wants to hear your preaching. if we care, we can read the bible on our own, without your assistance. i get sick of people pushing bible verses at me all the time. just because you know your verses doesn't mean you're any closer to God than me or anyone else.

just little ole...

to-re:southernbelle-what does your wife spending too much money have to do with any of this?? Evedentily you must be a little upset with her for wasting your money??

I think that it is well documented that these two guys were incredibly drunk , and should have never been in the drivers seat of any vehicle .. it is a tragic shame that this "accidet" happened in the first place , but i hesitate to call it an "accident" because accidents just happen through no one's fault , but with this there was alot of fault , most of that fault lies with the victims themselves. they were the ones who decided to drink to excess , and they didn't know when to stop . they also made a very poor decision to get into their car , Tim should have never been behind the wheel , and Mike should have never been riding with someone who was so drunk . then Tim made the very bad decision to drive at a really high rate of speed and loose control of his car , causing the fatal crash ... it is truely sad and unfortunate , but the fault lies with the Brant's and it doesnt do any good , and won't change what ultimately happened , by blaming anyone else
