A former Licking County special education teacher was sentenced to four years in prison today for having sex with one of her students.
Sonya Horn, 32, a former intervention specialist at Johnstown High School, entered Alford pleas in November to four counts of felony sexual battery, not admitting guilt but conceding that there was enough evidence against her to convict her at trial. She also pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence, admitting that she altered phone records to make it appear that she didn’t have inappropriate contact with her then-18-year-old male victim.
In the state of Ohio, it is illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student, no matter the student's age.
Prosecutor Brian Waltz recommended the four-year sentence, and Licking County Common Pleas Judge Thomas Marcelain agreed. Horn will be classified a Tier III sex offender, requiring her to register her address every 90 days for life. The state has revoked her teaching license.
Johnstown school district officials notified authorities of the possible inappropriate relationship in November 2011. Prosecutors said Horn, who was living in Gahanna, and the teen had sexual contact between June and October of 2011, both at and outside the school. Waltz said Horn also got married during that period.
Horn declined to speak in court today, as did her victim.
