Strength and courage. Laughs and tears. Emotions ran high Friday afternoon during a special assembly at New London High School.

Junior and senior high students gathered to wrap up a week in honor of cancer awareness month. A pair of NLHS sophomores -- Steven Shupp and Neely Parsons -- held a fundraiser in honor of their mothers, who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Each day had a different theme: Monday was yellow for Live Strong; Tuesday was gray for brain cancer; Wednesday was pink for breast cancer; Thursday was wig day; and Friday was purple for the assembly.

It's nice to hear about the good things our kids are doing instead of only stories about druggies and pervs.
