ASHLAND — A New London woman died after sustaining injuries in a three-vehicle accident Saturday night near the Huron and Ashland county line.

Helen R. Hildebrand, 50, of 1278 Palmer Road, died at Ashland Samaritan Hospital after being involved in a U.S. 250 crash one mile north of U.S. 224 in Ruggles Township.

Troopers with the Ashland post of the state Highway Patrol said Donald Dilgard, 68, of Ashland, is accused of going left of center while heading south on U.S. 250. Dilgard’s 2007 Volkswagen Jetta collided head-on with Hildebrand’s 1991 Ford Escort station wagon, which collided with the 2006 Kia Spectra driven by Marie Herbst, 23, of Fremont.

Dilgard and Ashland resident Sally Dilgard, 67, were transported to Ashland Samaritan Hospital with undisclosed injuries. A medical helicopter later flew both of them to Akron City Hospital.

Sally Dilgard was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Donald Dilgard has been released from the hospital.

Troopers said drugs and alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. The Ashland County Prosecutor’s office is reviewing the accident.
