Authorities have arrested a 16-year-old boy who is accused of shooting his mother and then fleeing.

Michael Mason was arrested on Pearl Street in Willard at about 1:30 p.m.

Alerts sent via phone calls, emails and texts through the Huron County's public alert system had advised area residents to be on the look out for "Michael Mason," who was described as a 5-foot-8, 140-pound white 15-year-old boy wearing Army shorts, a black shirt, glasses, orange backpack and a black hat.

Residents also were told that Mason might be armed and dangerous and driving a 2001 brown SUV.

A final alert notified residents that Mason had been caught.

The shooting took place at 23 N. Main St., Willard, in the house where Mason and his mother live. Court records indicate that Mason is now 16.

Willard City Schools were on a lockdown today due to the shooting but were just removed from lockdown status.

“We immediately went off lockdown status and right to regular procedures,” Willard Superintendent David Danhoff said.

Danhoff said Mason had not attended Willard schools for about a year. “He was a student here, but was a drop-out and was not at this school this year,” he said.

Danhoff had high praise for many who handled the situation.

“I want to thank the Willard police, which did a great job, and Chief Mark Holden, who also did a great job keeping us informed,” he said. “I also want to thank the staff and support staff and administrators and especially our parents and guardians for paying attention to the One Call.”

The Huron County Sheriff's Office assisted Willard police with the search.

The boy's mother, Melissa Mason, is listed in good condition at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, where she was taken after initially going to Mercy Willard Hospital. She sustained a gunshot wound in the back.

At ole45mag that " Jimmy" guy is James Brant Jr ( Vinnie) He is the biggest theif in Huron County he was just released from prison ( for the 2nd) time for stealing. He is going around Norwalk begging that he got one over on you. You should look into filing a police report. He is also wanted, from my understanding Willard Police have been trying to catch him. If this child has been running around with him, i'm sure he is on drugs.

Like Leno asks,"Where are the parents"? Sounds like he needed help a long time ago, like a foot up his aXX.

twiztidjuggangel

what if the parents were the problem?

what i really think

He wasn't very good I mean he had hardlibe and couldn't even get a UAV

Blaming the school system for this kid shooting his mother? Come on! They SUSPENDED him last year for that list of names. He has not been in the school system for the past YEAR. He's being "home-schooled". Obviously this was a family issue and the kid needs serious mental help. Blaming the school system is a low blow. They actually did an excellent job today of protecting the students at all area schools by immediately starting the lockdown procedure.

willard2014

we tried to get him help last year, but the school blew it off. he also had multiple weapons at school and the school lied and said the cops were never there. which i witnessed. they only sent him home for a day and he was back the next. if the school would have handled this last year, it wouldn't have went this far!

newsedwill

The school DID handle it, hence the suspension. You keep saying over and over that you tried to get this kid some help.. so what do you want? Someone to say good job? But the kid didn't seek help (yes they have to WANT to get help) and this happened. There is nothing the school could have done to prevent it, because it had NOTHING to do with the school. Get over yourself! If you're that worked up about it you should have went to law enforcement, but you didn't, so you're just as much to "blame" as the school which you say also "did nothing".

willard2014

we DID go to the willard police department. they told us nothing could be done. and as for suspension, that was only a slap on the wrist.

newsedwill

At least they DID something. Why are you blaming the schools and not law enforcement? I mean, they ENFORCE the LAWS and if there's nothing THEY can do, you think there's something the school could have done? Suspension is not a slap on the wrist. A slap on the wrist is a slap on the wrist, and lord knows schools aren't allowed to do that. I see you have a couple more years until you graduate high school. You'll learn someday.

willard2014

the school lied to all the parents/teachers that nothing happened at the school regarding Michael. they said that the cops were never there when he had a knife on him at school, and even about the hit list. we have a school psychologist for a reason, but did they even try that? no. stop acting like whs is the best pllace ever. because if anything, they aren't. if michael was the star football player, they would have done anything to help him.

Wait wait wait, what's your problem with Chief Holden now? First people have a problem with how the school handled this kid, now people have a problem with Holden saying he needs to go back to NL...are people ever happy? Is that all America does now is complain and find faults in other people and blame others for their responsibilities?

newsedwill

Nah, we're glad to have him. Chief Holden did a great job today catching the shooter.

KirstiLivingston

Thank you!!

I am not saying what this kid did was right and yes, OBVIOUSLY he needs help because he isn't thinking straight. But everyone should just shut up because you don't know the whole story. And then in that video above.. The cop says "You aren't supposed to shoot your mom." And then laughs? Omg. I am so glad I moved out of Willard last year. The police don't do anything about anything and the schools are just as pathetic as the police. I know of at least two cops that smoke pot in Willard and do other things and you look at the kid saying what he did was wrong? Willard is all about having a name. If you don't have a certain last name, you are a no one and Not everyone can do everything right. It's called mistakes, you learn from them and move on. And Willard is over rated and needs a freaking reality check. Don't go pointing fingers at the dang kid.. Yea, no one forced the kid to do what he did.. He did it on his own. But just shut up and mind your own business. Oh yea, I forgot to mention the BULLYING at Willard. Whatever though, Willard is Willard and no one is gonna change there.

Most Wanted

Did you really just compare shooting someone in the back to smoking pot? I bet Willard is really glad you moved also.

KirstiLivingston

Not so much of a compare. I am stating a fact and my opinion. Just like you keep stating your opinion.

arnmcrmn

You used fact and opinion in the same sentence. That's like calling Willard a little big town in the same sentence. Grind your uneducated mind and opinions somewhere else. Lol

believe it

lol I just said the same thing above your post...this person is messed up, they moved away from Willard but yet they know what the cops are doing? Pretty impressive.

KirstiLivingston

I lived in Willard for more than half my life. And I moved last year. I think I know a lot about Willard. So quit trying to come off sounding like you know what you are talking about and you don;t.

believe it

How do you know I don't know what I'm talking about? I could say the same thing about you, lol. And what does this have to do with this kid anyway? You brought up irrelevant things in your comment.

Most Wanted

Kirsti....you'd be alot more convincing if you'd just make sense!

Most Wanted

ahhhh....great minds!!
