Let the frenzy begin.
LeBron James informed the Miami Heat that he’s opting out of the final two years of his contract, which means he becomes a free agent Tuesday.
But doesn’t mean he’s leaving. In fact, the Heat, for what it’s worth, is the favorite to sign James, according to pregame.com oddsmakers.
“We look forward to sitting down with LeBron and his representatives and talking about our future together,” said president Pat Riley, who claimed to be unruffled by the move.
But still ... LeBron a free agent? Cleveland wasn’t the only place they were salivating:
¦ The Detroit Lions tweeted: “We hear there’s a new free agent on the market. Who thinks he’d be a good addition for the Lions?” It included a fake photo of James with the ball in the end zone and Matthew Stafford signaling TD behind him.
They couldn’t resist a forward/tight end hybrid.
¦ U.S. Soccer tweeted a No. 6 World Cup jersey with James on the back.
¦ The Carolina Hurricanes tweeted: “You know, you’d be 6-10 on skates.”
¦ But the Harlem Globetrotters missed out on the LeBron fun. They released their “draft” picks Tuesday, but did it before James’ announcement.
So he wasn’t on their list, which included Johnny Manziel and Landon Donovan.
¦ And what about LeBron coming to the Detroit Pistons? DJ Gallo, handicapping each team’s chances at sportspickle.com, said: “No way.”
