Arson suspect to be evaluated

An arson suspect will have his mental competency evaluated.

Joseph M. Adams, 30, of 4721 Zenobia Road, Wakeman, was in Huron County Common Pleas Court for a pre-trial hearing Monday.

"I've actually had this case since it was in muni (court)," said Huron County Public Defender David Longo, who spoke to Adams and his family at the time.

Given the suspect's history and the unusual circumstances of the case, Longo said it would be "grossly negligent" if Adams' mental competency weren't evaluated. The public defender didn't elaborate. Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Daivia Kasper said the state doesn't object to the evaluation.

Judge Jim Conway said he received Longo's motion to have Adams enter a plea of "not guilty by reason of insanity" just before Monday's hearing. The court will reschedule another hearing to address the evaluation once the results are back.
