A 30-year-old Berlin Heights man pleaded guilty Monday during a hearing of the Huron County Common Pleas Court to stealing his grandfather's pain killers.

Chad Maynard, 42 E. Main St., pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of drugs while an additional two charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.

On March 6, Maynard went to the pharmacy as a representative of his grandfather to pick up the elderly man's prescription for pain relieving drugs. The prescription included 80 pills and was never delivered to the man's relative. Instead, Maynard stole them, said the prosecutor.

About a week later on March 11, Maynard did the same thing, only this time netting 40 pills.

The local pharmacy became suspicious when a family member called concerned that the elderly man was receiving his pain medication and an investigation was launched by Norwalk Police Department.

Judge James Conway ordered a victim impact statement as well as a pre-sentence investigation and continued Maynard's $5,000 bond during the hearing.

Maynard is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 10.

The defendant could receive nine months to three years incarceration and be ordered to pay a $10,000 maximum fine, Conway said during the plea hearing.
