A three-run seventh inning lifted the Monroeville softball team to a 5-3 win over New London and a share of the Firelands Conference crown.

Both teams finished 12-2 in conference play.

Ashley Schaffer’s walk-off two-run homer put the Eagles past the Ladycats.

“It was a complete team win,” Monroeville head coach Abe Helmstetter said. “This is the first time Monroeville softball has won or shared a Firelands Conference title. I am very proud of the team for good attitude and effort that they have had throughout the season.”

Ashley Kraft earned the win for the Eagles. She struck out and walked six each.

Alex Bowers, who recorded six strikeouts and no walks, suffered the loss for the Ladycats.

It was the second loss in as many days for New London, which advanced all the way to the regional semifinal before losing 2-1 in nine innings to Bloomdale Elmwood on Wednesday.

“First of all, hats off to Monroeville and Abe,” New London softball coach Chip Motolik said. “They’ve done a great job. I didn’t do a good job coaching tonight. I didn’t get the girls mentally prepared after our loss last night. But they battled tonight,” he added. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. I’ve got a lot of great young ladies.”

Rylee Helmstetter, Macey Key and Alex Schaffer all hit triples for the Eagles, and Schaffer touched home once. Haven Helmstetter had two singles, while Halle Sattler and Haley Widman added one each. Haven Helmstetter and Sattler each scored a run.

Elise Chaffins paced New London with a pair of singles and an RBI. Taylor Moody had the only extra-base hit with a double. Rylee Haswell and Bowers each singled and Kelly Norrod chipped in with an RBI.

“We’ve got three seniors on this team with Norrod, Moody and Bowers, and they have represented New London with great leadership,” Motolik said. “They are great young ladies and that’s what really matters in life.”

New London finished the season 21-7 overall.

“We will be looking to use this year as a spring board for next year” Motolik said. “We’ve got a lot of players who can step up to it.”
