Norwalk will have representation at the 2014 state track and field tournament.

The boys’ 3200 relay team of senior Jared Lee, juniors Caden Foos and Luke Landis and senior Quentin Howell finished first during the opening night of the Division I regional tournament Wednesday at Amherst.

The Norwalk quartet finished at 7:51.57, which broke the school  mark of 7:56.67 set at last year’s regional.

Toledo St. John’s was second at 7:56.34.

Lee, Foos, Landis and Howell entered the regional at 7:56.71.

"They ran extremely well,’’ Truckers assistant coach Drew Karnehm said. “Coming into the meet they knew there was going to be some tough competition and they stepped up to the challenge.

“Jared ran a great opening leg getting us a great lead and Caden built upon that lead in the second leg,’’ the coach added. “Luke ran his season best, helping the cause and Quentin closed out the race with the next closest team five seconds back.

“These four guys have worked extremely hard over the last couple of months and deserve all the accolades they are receiving. Based on times out of other regionals we are sitting in fourth going into next week. These guys are really excited, but know this race is done and need to focus on their races for Friday. Again we couldn’t be more proud of these guys and hopefully we can get on the podium next week.”

The top four in each event advance to the state tournament June 6 and 7 in Columbus.

Finals were contested in the boys pole vault, 3200 relay, long jump and discus and girls’ 3200 relay, high jump and shot put.

Norwalk’s girls’ 3200 relay team of Sydnie Fetherolf, Kelsey McQuillen, Alexa Perry and Cora Grosswiler finished 14th in 10:07.94.

Norwalk’s 800 and 1600 relay teams and Jordan Johnson 100 and 200 advanced to Friday’s running finals.

The remaining field event finals  are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Running finals are slated to start at 6 p.m.
