TNS Regional News • Feb 9, 2014 at 4:07 PM

A 2-year-old boy who police suspect was beaten by his mother’s boyfriend in late January remains in is in critical condition, according to a report by Beacon Journal news partner WEWS in Cleveland.

Kurtis Mathes, 23, of Johnston Court, has been charged with child neglect and assault in the incident, according to police. He is being held in the Summit County Jail.

Mathes, who was babysitting Aiden Werner in the 500 block of Johnston Court, called 911 at about 7 p.m. Jan. 29 and reported Aiden had fallen down the stairs.

Aiden’s mother, Rhiannon Barnett, was working at the time of the incident.

Police and paramedics responding to the emergency call found the child unresponsive, the television station reported.

Aiden subsequently had emergency brain surgery at Akron Children’s Hospital, lasting more than 2 hours. WEWS reported that the boy had to be revived at one point during the surgery.

Authorities determined the injuries were not consistent with Mathes’ report and suspect the child had been beaten or was a victim of shaken baby syndrome.

Police said they would know more after looking at the results of an MRI performed Friday.
