Percocet dealer fined $1,000

A Norwalk man with an extensive criminal record has been fined $1,000 for selling six Percocet pills to a confidential informant.

John A. Cory, 46, of 39B W. Seminary St., didn't testify during his two-day trial in mid-December in Huron County Common Pleas Court. Jurors deliberated for about 75 minutes Dec. 18 before finding him guilty of one count of trafficking in oxycodone.

At his sentencing hearing, Cory was ordered to spend 120 days in the Huron County Jail on the work-release program. As part of his three years of basic probation, he must reimburse the Huron County Sheriff's Office $40 to cover the cost of lab testing and had his driver's license suspended for six months. Cory also is subject to random drug screens.

Cory has an extensive adult criminal record, which contains misdemeanor charges of assault, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and multiple counts of driving under the influence. Judge Jim Conway said the defendant "self-reported the theft of a school bus as a juvenile" and his record clearly indicates he hasn't addressed his alcohol problem and commits the same type of offenses.

Also, the judge said Cory hasn't expressed any remorse for selling six Percocet pills to an informant during a June 19, 2012 controlled drug buy at his apartment.

"I asked him (Cory) if he had the pills I wanted. ... He said, 'Yeah,'" the informant said during the trial. "I gave him the money once he gave me the pills."

Shortly before the transaction, Detective Sgt. Josh Querin and another detective set the informant up with a wire and searched him for contraband. After not finding anything, they gave him three $20 bills and the informant walked to Cory's apartment.

"Mr. Cory maintains his innocence on this," Huron County Public Defender David Longo told the judge Wednesday.

However, Cory said he didn't plan on appealing the case.

If he violates the terms of his probation, he faces 18 months in prison.
