Tow truck driver sustains life-threatening injuries

A tow truck driver sustained life-threatening injuries Thursday morning when a motorist struck him as he was preparing a disabled vehicle for towing.

Scott A. Farrell, 55, of Sandusky, parked the 2013 Ford F250 flatbed tow truck on the shoulder of Ohio 2 near Ohio 13 and was in the process of hoisting a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 on the flatbed at 9:15 a.m. when the accident happened, said troopers with the Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol.

Jessica L. Hellisz, 30, of Cleveland, was driving a 2010 Dodge Nitro SUV when she failed to maintain control of her vehicle, slid into the Silverado and struck Farrell, the tow truck driver, troopers said.

Farrell's injuries were life-threatening, troopers said. He was transported by Huron EMS to Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, and then flow by a LifeFlight helicopter to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

Hellisz was transported by the Huron Fire Department to Firelands. However, she did not sustain any injuries, troopers said.

The accident remains under investigation.
