A Millersburg deer hunter died this weekend after he fell 20-25 feet from a tree stand.

The man's son-in-law called in the fatality to the Ashland County Sheriff's Office at 7:08 p.m. Saturday. The Ruggles Township incident happened on Township Road 1461, just south of County Road 16, which is about 1 1/2 miles south of Huron County.

"It was an Amish gentleman from Millersburg," said Deputy Kyle Pidgeon, who didn't have the victim's name when he was interviewed Tuesday.

"It was a hunting accident. It was a fatality," he added. "I responded there and so did the squad and the squad pronounced him (dead)."

Pidgeon estimates the victim was in his late 50s or early 60s. The deputy said the man and the tree stand in which he was standing fell to the ground.

The man and his son-in-law had permission to hunt deer on the private property.

"He (the victim) didn't come out of the woods when he was supposed to. His son-in-law went back there and found him," Pidgeon said.
