The Sandusky post of the state Highway Patrol is currently investigating a one-vehicle, fatal crash that occurred just before noon Saturday in Erie County.
Ellen J. Gaskalla, 66, of Huron was driving a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser south on Frailey Road, north of Darrow Road, at 11:49 a.m. when she went off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox, continued through the ditch and struck another mailbox, troopers said. Gaskalla overcorrected and drove back onto the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn.
The vehicle then went off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch, ejecting Gaskalla, who had not been wearing her safety belt, troopers said.
Gaskalla came to rest in the ditch and the vehicle landed upright and over top of her, but not resting on her, troopers said. Gaskalla was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
The crash remains under investigation, and alcohol, drug use or medical conditions are unknown at this time.
No other vehicles were involved and no other occupants in the vehicle.
