The Elyria post of the state Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal traffic crash that took place at 8:40 a.m. Saturday on Ohio 252 south of Redfern Road in Lorain County's Columbia Township.

David Makaryk, 44, of Columbia Station, was driving a 2003 black Ford Fusion south on Ohio 252 when the vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck two utility poles before coming to a stop, troopers said. Makaryk was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness to the crash stated that Makaryk was traveling at a high rate of speed behind a red Ford F-150 pickup truck just prior to the crash, troopers said. The pickup truck, driven by a white male, continued southbound and did not stop after the crash.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol and/or drugs were involved, troopers said.

Assisting agencies on scene included ODOT, Columbia Township Fire Department and JC Towing Services.
