A Norwalk man convicted of stealing two handguns from "someone who trusted him" was sentenced to two years in prison Thursday.

Kevin J. Loyer, 36, most recently of 330 E. Water St., admitted in court he committed the June 30 crime to support his heroin habit.

Loyer, in late January, pleaded guilty to theft of a firearm. In exchange, the state agreed to dismiss charges of receiving stolen property and breaking and entering.

The Norwalk Police Department investigated the theft of a firearm, which reportedly involved a co-defendant, local resident Erica L. Trushel, 42. Authorities have said Loyer stole two handguns from a family acquaintance while Trushel reportedly was with him.

"When the defendant (Loyer) committed this offense, he admitted he stole from someone who trusted him ... someone who grew up in his home," said Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Dina Shenker, who also noted Loyer was in an unhealthy relationship with his girlfriend, Trushel.

"I believe the co-defendant has been indicted," Shenker said.

Trushel, who is prohibited from being on a Greenwich Milan Townline Road property, has an April 23 trial date set on one count of complicity to burglary. If convicted of the second-degree felony, she faces two to eight years in prison.

Huron County Sheriff's Detectives Josh Querin and Bill Duncan investigated an Aug. 17 break-in at a Cleveland Road business. The investigators have said Loyer and Trushel reportedly stole some money, but they didn't have to forcibly enter 777 Sweepstakes because they had a key.

"We believe it was a heroin-related crime," Querin said during an earlier interview.

Huron County Public Defender David Longo said it's possible Loyer "took the wrap" for a crime someone else committed.

Loyer must pay $1,000 in restitution to a male victim to cover the cost of some missing cash and jewelry. Huron County Common Pleas Judge Jim Conway also ordered him to pay $1,550 to 777 Sweepstakes.
