Pastor accused of sex crimes to face jury

A jury trial in the case against a Gallia County man charged with 20 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor has been continued in the Common Pleas Court of Gallia County.

The trial in the case against David A. Young, 46, Rio Grande, has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. March 25 in the common pleas courtroom, according to a journal entry filed late last month. A jury trial was originally slated for January 9, 2013.

Young, who waived his right to a speedy trial earlier this year, also had his negotiated plea filing deadline extended to January 28, 2013, however, as of press time Tuesday, no negotiated plea in this case has been filed.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to 20 counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in October 2012 after he was arrested for the alleged sexual misconduct with a victim the indictment only describes as a 15-year-old "Jane Doe."

The offenses are alleged to have occurred over a period of time between September 25, 2011, and September 25, 2012.

Young was arrested on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 16 by deputies with the Gallia County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of agents with the Crimes Against Children Unit of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

A joint investigation by the two agencies led to the suspect's arrest at the Simpson United Methodist Church in Rio Grande where, at the time of his arrest, Young was serving as the pastor.

As previously reported, the victim in this case had allegedly been a part of a class that the defendant had taught through the church.

The defendant made an initial appearance in the Gallipolis Municipal Court following his arrest where a probable cause hearing was expected to be held; however, the municipal court charges were later dismissed as Young's case was heard by a grand jury in the common pleas court and an indictment was handed down on October 19.

During his arraignment hearing last October, Young's bond was set at $250,000, 10 percent. He is currently being held in the Gallia County Jail.

He is being represented in this case by defense attorney Charles Knight.
