The brother of a convicted armed robber entered a "not guilty" plea to being the possible getaway driver.

Anthony A. Ward, 27, of Fredericktown, is charged with one count each of complicity to aggravated robbery and robbery. If convicted, he faces up to 11 years in prison.

"The allegation is this gentleman was a getaway driver," Huron County Public Defender David Longo said.

On Dec. 3, Ward's older brother, Van J. Ward, 31, also of Fredericktown, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of robbery.

Van Ward, who was to be sentenced today, was convicted of using half of the money stolen from the L&L Drive-Thru in Willard to buy heroin in Shelby. He faces two to eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $15,000.

Longo said the elder Ward was very cooperative in the investigation and drew a map related to the crime for authorities.

On June 27, one of the brothers parked at the Willard drive-thru. Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler has said the elder Ward wore a ski mask when he entered the South Conwell Avenue business, "presented what appeared to be a gun" and demanded money from the clerk.

The Huron County Sheriff's Office started developing leads in the case July 2 while Willard police were involved in another investigation.

Sheriff's Detectives Josh Querin and John Harris interviewed Ward on Aug. 14. After he provided information on where the air-soft gun was, detectives recovered it that day in Willard.

"He indicated he had a heroin addiction of about 20 balloons a day," Leffler said in December.

Ward, who is out on bond, is subject to random drug screens and is prohibited from possessing any deadly weapons.

Anthony Ward is prohibited from having any association with the victim if he posts a $20,000 bond at the Huron County Jail. His Huron County Common Pleas Court trial is set for April 9.

Huron County Assistant Prosecutor Richard Woodruff, at Monday's hearing, said Ward has "a significant criminal history," but didn't elaborate.
