Willard police officer Justin Nowak was hired recently by the city, but he won't work for its police department beyond Thursday.
The officer didn't do anything wrong; he has told city manager Brian Humphress he has found another job because voters didn't approve the city's police levy in November. Nowak, who is second-lowest in seniority, was concerned about future layoffs, Humphress said.
November wasn't the first time city officials requested voters approve an additional income tax to fund police positions. It won't be the last, either.
Council voted Monday to approve placing the 1/8 percent, five-year additional income tax request on the May ballot. If approved, the additional tax would go into effect Jan. 1, 2014 and last through Dec. 31, 2018.
A story about this proposed tax and other matters discussed by Willard council was published in Tuesday's Reflector.
