Norwalk school board ponders possible cuts

The Norwalk City Schools budget will be cut. The question now is, in what areas.

School officials discussed possibilities, but took no action, at a recent special meeting.

Since 2008, Norwalk's revenue loss has added up to more than $2 million per year, due to federal and state education budget cuts. The special meeting came in the wake of voters defeating on election day an additional tax for daily operating purposes. The levy would have raised $1.85 million annually for the school system for five years. Last March, almost 60 percent of voters turned down a 6-mills additional levy that would have generated $2 million to cover daily operations.

The state is requiring district officials to come up with a written plan to make up for deficit spending in fiscal year 2014. It is due to the Ohio Department of Education on Dec. 31.
