A Licking County man died yesterday after a crash on his way home from a state-championship football game.

Timothy A. Hopkins, 53, of Newark was driving west on Rt. 16 when his car crossed the center line and struck an eastbound tractor-trailer east of the Muskingum-Coshocton county line, Sgt. Chuck Merryman of the State Highway Patrol said today.

The crash occurred about 4 p.m. on Friday.

“We believe that Hopkins may have fallen asleep,” Merryman said. “He had mentioned that he was tired to one of the passengers in the car.”

Hopkins was returning from Massillon, where Newark Catholic High School lost to Marion Local in the Division VI championship game.

He died at Grant Medical Center in Columbus the next day.

Hopkins’ wife, Marcy, 45, and another passenger, Corinne Troxell, 20, were treated for minor injuries, Merryman said.

The driver of the semi, Robert L. Patterson, 34, of McDermott, Ohio, was not injured.
