The presidential campaign for Barack Obama is up and running in the area.
The campaign group “Firelands Folks for Obama” started meeting on Feb. 1. In a series of organizing sessions, the group has now planned for some campaign events, starting with a two-day voter canvas project Saturday and Sunday in Sandusky. In the latest meeting held in Bay View Saturday, the group met with a campaign representative from the national campaign, who will be working and headquartered in the area.
A voter canvas of Norwalk’s northeast side is also planned for 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. There will be more voter canvassing events planned in the area in Huron, Bellevue and other locations as the primary draws closer.
Those who wish to participate in this voter outreach project are asked to go to www.barackobama.com, and click on the find events button. It will direct readers to a page on which they type in their five digit zip code in a dialogue box.
To find events within 30 miles of their zip, readers should click on the submit button. This will bring up a page with a list of events being sponsored in the Firelands by the Obama campaign.
Readers can indicate the event they want to participate in by clicking on the sign-up line. It will take them to the RSVP page, type the number of people coming in the box and hit submit.
The Firelands Folks for Obama group is also planning laptop and cell phone calling parties, where they can meet up with others, eat lunch and make calls to voters in the area for the campaign by accessing www.barackobama.com to get local voter lists and telephone numbers.
If anyone is interested in doing some of this critical outreach that can be done from anywhere that has Internet access, send an e-mail to: Firelandsfolksforobama848@barackobama.com.
