Bicycles can be inexpensive even (gasp) free of charge.
But, there's nothing cheap about learning fire safety techniques.
Five local fourth-graders received free bicycles Thursday for writing out their household's fire escape plan.
The project is part of the annual Fire Prevention Week, in which local firefighters talk to elementary students about techniques such as Stop, Drop and Roll.
Those who returned forms were entered into a drawing to win a free new bicycle.
Out of hundreds of area fourth-graders, the following students' names were drawn: Jessica Vargas, of Pleasant Elementary; Gabby Jenkins, of League; Alex Ward, of Maplehurst; Spencer Lacy, of Trinity Christian Academy and Julia Rhoad, of Norwalk Catholic School elementary.
