C3C Travis S. Root, a sophomore at the United States Air Force Academy, has been selected to serve as an instructor pilot for the academy’s soaring program.

Root will begin instructor pilot training next month with the 94th Flight Training Squadron. Upon completion of the program in May, he will begin teaching flight theory and flying skills to USAFA cadets in the TG-10B sailplane. He will then serve as an instructor pilot until he graduates from the Air Force Academy in 2010.

He was one of 80 cadets selected for the specialized instructor school, out of 250 who applied. USAFA provides soaring training to about 4,000 cadets enrolled at the academy.

Root, a geospatial science major, is a 2006 graduate of Norwalk High School. He is the son of Thomas L. and Kathy G. Root, of Norwalk, and the grandson of Thomas F. and Joanne L. Root, of Norwalk, and Robert J. and Arlene Geer, of Norwalk.
