READERS FORUM - Wellington residents appreciate aid

Norwalk Reflector Staff • Oct 29, 2015 at 12:01 PM

The members of the Wellington Community Fire District would like to thank everyone who assisted us at the Hemlock Cottage warehouse fire. What turned out to be 13 hours on scene could not have gone any smoother without the help of numerous people.

Thanks to our spouses who gathered food and beverages, along with the American Red Cross; Lee Grissinger at the Wellington Pizza House; Gerald Fishbaugh at East of Chicago; Barb O'Keefe from the Village Market and Wellington Subway.

We would also like to thank the residents of the surrounding area who offered a porch to rest on, drinks, and their words of encouragement. Retired firefighter Terry Mazzone also provided support on the fireground, as well as at the fire station. Additionally, a big thank you to Wellington's Police Department, their officers and the Wellington Police Auxiliary unit for their help with traffic control and crowd control throughout the week. Also, a great deal of help was provided by the Village of Wellington and its employees and equipment, specifically Bob Brasee, John Honoshofsky, Jr. and Dave Bealer and the electric department employees.

Finally, a huge thank you to our neighboring fire departments for their services. More than 100 firefighters from 20 departments took part in this fire and for their aid we are very grateful. Fire departments from Amherst, Camden, Carlisle, Chatham, Columbia, Eaton, Erhart, Florence, Grafton Village, Grafton Township, Lagrange, Litchfield, Lodi, New London, Oberlin, Rochester, Ruggles-Troy, Spencer, Sullivan, and Wakeman all helped in some way. Thank you to the South Lorain County Ambulance District for standing by during the event.

While every attempt was made to recognize all who provided a service, in such a large-scale event, we apologize if this has happened.

Chief Robert J. Walker
