OUR VIEW: Buckeyes do well to help us forget pros woes

While no Cleveland sports team has won any major titles in four decades, it is a great time to be a fan of Northeast Ohio's adopted college team The Ohio State University.

The last decade has been a treat for Buckeye fans. This year marks the second Final Four appearance for the basketball team since 1999 (setting aside the ridiculous NCAA penalty means that everyone must now pretend OSU did not make the Final Four that year).

In January, OSU played for its second national football championship this millennium. And, though they fell short of their ultimate goal, the team's perfect regular season gave beleaguered Ohio sports fans something around which to rally.

OSU and its talented freshman leaders, Greg Oden and Mike Connely Jr., will take the court Saturday against Georgetown with a chance to move on and play for the national championship. Coincidentally, the Florida Gators the same school that you might recall ended the football team's season will play the UCLA Bruins. We, for one, will be rooting for Florida because if the Gators and Buckeyes both win it will be the first time the same two schools played for both the football and basketball championships.

And we're willing to bet most Buckeye fans would like a chance to repay Florida for upsetting the football team. With the Gators defending national champs on the hardwood, this time it would be the Buckeyes who get to play spoiler.

No matter what happens, we congratulate the student-athletes for their tremendous season.
