No charges have been filed in the ongoing investigation involving a small aircraft that crashed Friday night on Laylin Road.

The pilot, Shawn F. Kappner, 41, of Mainville, was the only occupant and was not injured. The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. Friday on Laylin Road about one-tenth of a mile south of U.S. 20 in Norwalk Township.

Troopers with the state Highway Patrol said Kappner left the Double J Airport near Cincinnati about 6:45 p.m. and was headed toward the Huron County Airport when he lost power while flying. Troopers said Kappner's 2007 Skyrider made contact with the road and started to fishtail when he attempted to land on Laylin Road.

The single-engine plane went off the east side of the road and hit a ditch. Kappner told troopers he has about 80 hours of experience flying that type of aircraft.

Weather conditions were good and do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Troopers contacted the Federal Aviation Administration about the incident and had Kappner's plane moved to the Huron County Airport.
