A Mansfield man was sentenced to one year in prison Thursday for sexually assaulting his 13-year-old girlfriend.

Benjamin T. Myers, 21, was classified as a habitual sex offender, meaning he will have to register and update his address with the sheriff's office where he will live after his prison term. Huron County Prosecutor Russell Leffler said schools and neighbors will be alerted about Myers being a registered sex offender.

He pleaded guilty May 17 to an amended charge of attempted unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The one-year prison term was the maximum sentence for the fifth-degree felony.

Leffler said the offense happened sometime between the end of February through March. He explained that the court classified Myers as a habitual sex offender because as a juvenile, he was convicted of a Richland County sex offense when he committed the Huron County crime.
