Last week, I wrote about the far-reaching and profound implications of waning social connectivity in modern society. People are losing their sense of membership in a broader community, and as a result, they have less of a sense of "self-interest rightly understood."

Every generation, of course, has heard its fathers talk about "their day." And, for at least the first half of the 20th century, this was nothing more than natural nostalgia. In fact, that period saw a rising level of social involvement.
