Troopers are investigating a crash Tuesday on Old State Road near Ohio 162. Steven M. Smith, 34, of 3571 Austin Drive, Willard, went off Old State Road and hit a ditch while avoiding an oncoming white pickup truck that continued heading south. Smith reported possible injuries, but wasn't transported.

James R. A Ford , 64, of Maumee, hit a deer Tuesday on Hettle Road.

Brandon M. Vacha, 18, of 1305 Greenfield Drive, Willard, was charged with failure to control Tuesday after he swerved to miss a car traveling in front of him on Ohio 99 that was turning into Holiday Lakes. He went off the right side, down a ditch and hit a culvert.


Paul D. Fink, 38, of Burlington, Ky., was charged with driving with a suspended license and failure to stop at a red light Sept. 4 in connection with an incident at the intersection at U.S. 20 and Milan Avenue. He also was arrested on a Boone County Sheriff's Office warrant. Fink was released Friday from the Huron County Jail after posting bond; he had been awaiting extradition to Kentucky.

Mary E. Simon, whose age and address was unavailable, was charged with improper backing Saturday in a North Street collision with the vehicle driven by Jarrod D. Barnett, whose personal information also was unavailable.

Joshua A. Whitacre, 19, of 30 1/2 Walnut St., Norwalk, was arrested and charged with domestic violence in connection with an altercation Sunday in a vehicle traveling to Monroeville from Norwalk. The victim accused him hitting the dashboard, threatening her and attempting to gain control of the car by grabbing the steering wheel, nearly causing the vehicle to hit the telephone pole in front of the police station. Whitacre currently is in custody at the Huron County Jail, unable to post 10 percent of a $5,000 bond.


A West League Street resident reported someone entered his vehicle Tuesday, but nothing appeared to be missing.

A Ford Avenue resident reported there was a very lethargic and disoriented man who may have overdosed on prescription medication Tuesday. Police found the man and had him transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center.

A Maple Street resident reported being awakened by someone attempting to open her front door and back patio door Tuesday. She got up and saw the male suspect jump the fence in the back yard and run through a neighbor's yard.

An area motorist reported losing her rear license plate while on the way to work Tuesday on North Pleasant Street.

The owner of a Jefferson Street business reported someone cut the exhaust pipe connected to the engine of a 1996 Jeep Cherokee waiting to be repaired Tuesday. The suspect also cut the pipe after the muffler.

Brett S. Graves, 36, of Sandusky, was arrested on six local warrants Tuesday at the Erie County Jail. He currently is in custody at the Huron County Jail.

Kimberly S. Cross, 32, of 57 Baker St., Apt. 24, was arrested on three local warrants Tuesday at the Erie County Jail. She currently is in custody at the Huron County Jail.

A Glover Avenue resident reported someone took the hinges off the door to her room and stole several items Tuesday.


Assisted North Central EMS with a patient at 11:39 a.m. Tuesday at 28 Norwood Ave. Returned to station at 12:22 p.m.


A Peru Olena Road resident reported someone tampered with a dead bolt door lock Tuesday.

Dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call about a Scranton Road house fire Tuesday. The Townsend Township, New London and Norwalk fire departments and a deputy responded to the scene.

An area resident reported seeing a frail male pedestrian Tuesday on Lovers Lane Road.

An Egypt Road, Willard, resident accused a male suspect of exposing himself by dropping his pants or flashing someone "numerous times in the last six months" as of Tuesday.

A South Railroad Street, Collins, resident reported a suspected trespassing incident Tuesday.

A Hartland Center Road, Collins, resident reported finding several broken windows when she came home Tuesday.

A West Ashtabula Street, North Fairfield, resident reported a relative locked her out of the house Tuesday and put furniture in front of the door.
