Commissioners bring the beef

Where's the beef?

Well, it was at the Huron County Fair Wednesday afternoon.

That's where Huron County Commissioners Mike Adelman, Gary Bauer and Ralph Fegley took their turn at the Cattlemen's Associations' grill.

"I've worked with the Huron County Cattlemen forever," Bauer said while manning the grill.

"I'm a double-flipper," Fegley said. "I make them every way from extra rare to shoe leather."

Huron County is a beef-producing area. According to the Ohio Department of Agriculture, this county ranks 48th in beef production out of Ohio's 88 counties. By contrast, Erie County is 81st out of 88. The 2007 ODA estimates are 10,000-plus animals are raised for beef in Huron County.

There are more than 170 beef-related projects taken by youth in Huron County. These include feeder calves, beef breeding, market steer and carcass steer.

According to president Rich Benich, the Cattlemen use funds from the beef stand to award scholarships to college students, provide a beef dinner for Huron County Project Leadership, contribute funds to fairgrounds improvements and give award money to carcass steer winners and this year gave T-shirts to beef skillathon participants.

Bauer said he likes his burgers well done, while Adelman said his are cooked "very well done." Fegley likes his "medium."

When Adelman was asked if he likes beef products, he said, "it's more like a love affair with steak sandwiches."

"I've learned there are more than three grades of how people like their steaks," Fegley added.

Fegley knows a thing or two about, beef, growing up on a ranch that had short-horned cattle and angus.

The 2007 beef queen was Lillian Hansberger, a senior at Western Reserve High School. She has a beef carcass steer this year through FFA. She has visited the Huron and Ashland county beef shows, given out beef samples at the fall fun fest, helped distribute beef cook books to area high schools and provided beef recipe booklets to area supermarkets.
